Chapter Nineteen

Iris gave me a squeeze as we were ushered into the scream-and-cry room to wait for the judges’ decisions.

“I’m going home,” I told her. “They loved your decorations, but I don’t think they liked the cupcakes.”

“Then they’re crazy,” Iris told me. “Those cupcakes were freakin’ awesome. I don’t see how anyone could have done any better.” She whipped her head around to glare at the D’jinn sitting across the room.

I put a hand on her arm. “Don’t make a big deal out of it,” I told her. “It doesn’t matter anyway.”

“But they’re cheating,” Iris insisted loudly. “How can you let them get away with that?”

I shook my head at her, twisting the cap off of my water bottle and downing the contents in about three gulps. All this sweating was making me thirsty. “Let it rest, Iris. It’s done and over with.”

Iris crossed her arms over her chest, her face a study in fury underneath her rainbow hair. “Whatever.”

The judges didn’t deliberate for long. We filed out in front of them and stood patiently, waiting for the axe to fall.

I knew I was going to hear my name, so I almost walked out as the name passed Owen’s lips.

“Libby Jenson,” Owen announced, “I’m sorry, but this battle is over for you.”

Wait, that wasn’t my name!

I’d made it to the final round?

I had no time to wrap my head around the idea. Owen was already describing the event we were to cater for.

It was down to me and the baker with the D’jinn on her team. I could feel their eyes on me as Owen verbally danced through an uncanny number of witty puns to inform us that we were going to be making a display and cupcakes for…

“Ice Dancing with Stars!” Owen announced proudly.

Suddenly the snow theme from the last round made sense.

“Remember,” Owen said charmingly. “In addition to the cupcake creations you made last round, we will expect to have three new flavors, all following our theme, all decorated and placed on a magical display that our construction teams will be assisting you with. In this round you will each have four baking assistants and three hours. The time starts… now!”

I didn’t know if three hours felt incredibly long or impossibly short for the amount of work we had to get done. I was already wrung out and exhausted from the previous rounds of competition. How on earth was I going to be able to find the energy to create three new cupcakes and a display?

At least I had Iris by my side!

“The volcano cupcake isn’t going to work for this theme,” I told her, “We’re going to have to come up with a different decoration for that cupcake.”

She nodded. “Do you have any idea what you’re going to do for the three new cakes?”

I shook my head. “I’m working on it. I was thinking of doing something with rose petals—you know how the skating performers always get roses after they dance?”

Iris nodded thoughtfully. “I can make the whole top of the cupcakes look like roses,” she suggested.
